SQUID GAME Season 3: Top Theories & Everything We Know

Following Squid Game Season 2 being released and leaving us on the biggest cliffhanger that the show has ever had, there’s one question on all of our minds: When will Season 3 be released? As well as that, what could the plot be, and which story might be on the horizon? In this post, let’s dive into all that is known about the upcoming season, along with some theories and predictions on what could happen next.

Warning: This post contains spoilers.

Release Date and Production Insights

There is definite good news – there will be a new season of the show. Netflix usually considers a show’s performance before greenlighting another season, but due to the phenomenal success of Season 1 and Season 2, Season 3 was announced immediately. However, the bad news is that Season 3 is set to be the final season and will not return after this last installment. This message has come straight from the creator, and it’s not just a rumor.

When it comes to the actual release date, there’s more good news; we won’t have to wait another three years. The third season has already been filmed and wrapped up in production, so it’s pretty much sitting on the shelf, ready to go. The creator has confirmed that Season 3 is intended to be released in as little as one year’s time, aiming for sometime in 2025.

Given the trend from the previous seasons – Season 1 arriving in October and Season 2 in December – it’s predicted that the new season may debut between October and December of 2025. Squid Game feels like a show best enjoyed indoors during late autumn or early winter rather than in the peak of summer.

Theories on the Season 3 Storyline

Season 2 concluded with a massive cliffhanger: Inho returned to being the frontman and killed Jang in front of Guihan. The story is likely to pick up directly after where we left off, with Guihan being taken back to the main room following his failed uprising and rebellion. Guihan will probably be feeling the guilt and weight of Jang’s death – after all, it was his idea to launch an attack on the soldiers. Remember the heart-to-heart when they made plans to get a drink together once outside? That plan is now obviously off the table, and Guihan’s mourning, coupled with the mass casualties from the battle and the night ambush, will weigh heavily on him.

One theory suggests that the “O’s” (the organizers) might win the majority vote the next day when deciding whether the games should continue, progressing forward with the next challenges. Out of the six games featured in Season 1, the players have only participated in three so far. This means we might see two more games being played before reaching the ultimate final game – the titular Squid Game – in the finale. Of course, this is assuming Guihan is unable to stop the games from continuing, as he currently faces an uphill battle.

Another intriguing possibility involves Noel Soldier Number 11. We know she has a spark of humanity that sets her apart from the other soldiers. She hesitates to let the other soldiers sit through torture and organ harvesting, and it seemed like she didn’t kill Player 246 during the Season 2 finale due to a connection he shared with her – given his sick daughter, Naon. This empathy might lead her to switch sides, emerging as one of the biggest unforeseen threats to the frontman and the game’s other superiors.

There’s also speculation that Janall will make his way to the island, posing an additional threat. This would force the frontman into a battle on two fronts: one on the inside with Guihan, the “O’s,” and Noel, and another with Janall and his group of mercenaries. It is thought that Janall might soon learn that the captain was a traitor – a role that was influenced by the frontman, who had the captain monitor Inho since they were brothers.

Character Predictions and Final Outcomes

It’s interesting to note that Season 3 probably won’t introduce many new characters. Unlike Season 2, where a wide array of new players entered the games as most Season 1 characters died off, Season 3 seems poised to continue with the current roster. The only potential new character might be Noel’s daughter, should she make it to the South and become part of the organ harvesting subplot. Otherwise, familiar faces such as Guihan, Inho, the frontman, Janall, Mangi, Juni, Player 246, number 44, the captain, Wock, the officer Deo, Player 388, Naon Hju, Player 120, Young Siik, his mother Gamja, Player 149, and others like Numu Minsu and Player 100, are all likely to return.

Some characters met their end in Season 2 – for instance, the recruiter (killed at the beginning), GE Han, Jang (killed by the frontman), Semi (killed by Numu Yungi), and Thanos (killed by Mangi). These characters will most probably not be returning in the next season. There’s a possibility that the games will ultimately be destroyed, and Guihan might even end up dying in his attempt to cancel them, transforming his character from a man seeking victory for money to someone who finds solace in sacrificing himself to end the suffering and exploitation once and for all.

Personally, a darker route would be compelling – spending three seasons watching Guihan striving to be victorious, only to ultimately fail, resulting in the games carrying on. The stakes in Season 1 were incredibly high, particularly when former friends like Guihan and Sang Wu faced off. It’s hard to imagine the emotional depth of those relationships matching up in this season if Guihan is to redeem his past actions before the final round, which only needs two survivors.
